GM Doubles Down on V-8s with New $918m Engine Investment

Road & Track

GM just threw a billion-dollar wrench into the “V-8 is dead” narrative. Despite all the EV buzz, the automaker is investing $918 million to develop a brand-new sixth-gen small-block V-8—because torque, noise, and good times still matter.

The money’s being spread across plants in Michigan, Ohio, and New York to build everything from camshafts to intake manifolds. Flint gets the biggest chunk, but even Defiance, OH, is getting in on the action—with a side investment in EV parts too. Balance, right?

To support production, GM also announced an additional $888 million investment into its Tonawanda plant in New York. The funding will upgrade the facility to handle the new engine line and secure jobs tied to internal combustion engine manufacturing.

While GM maintains its long-term goal of going all-electric by 2035, this investment signals that traditional engines will continue to play a key role in its lineup for years to come—especially in trucks and SUVs where demand remains strong.
