Tesla Moves On From the S and X

Tesla

Tesla just threw a curveball at the car world: after more than a decade on the road, the Model S and Model X are getting “honorable discharges” with production ending in the second quarter of 2026. These were once the halo rides that proved electric cars could be fast, luxurious, and exciting — but demand has fallen off a cliff, and Tesla is ready to pivot.

Instead of building premium sedans and SUVs, the Fremont factory that once churned them out will be retooled for something very different: Optimus humanoid robots and other autonomy tech. Elon Musk says this is all part of moving into what he calls an autonomous future — and yes, they’re aiming for robot production in the millions.

So what dies, and what lives on? Model 3 and Model Y sales still dominate the lineup, while the Cybertruck, Roadster and future robotaxi ambitions get the spotlight. It’s a symbolic — and borderline surreal — shift from building luxury EVs to chasing the sci-fi dream of robots and self-driving fleets.
