Trump Nixes California Gas Car Ban, Floats New Auto Tariffs
President Trump just reversed California’s plan to ban the sale of new gas-powered cars by 2035. By signing joint resolutions passed by Congress, he also scrapped two other state rules—one pushing electric trucks and another tightening emissions. Trump called the EV mandate a “disaster,” arguing that most drivers still prefer combustion engines.
But the revoking didn’t stop there. Trump also threatened to hike auto tariffs above the current 25%, saying it could push foreign automakers to build more cars in the U.S. The comment follows his recent move to double tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.
The blocked rules would’ve required EV sales to ramp up each year until internal combustion was mostly phased out. Plug-in hybrids would’ve been allowed, but traditional gas-only models would’ve been history in California by 2035.
Now, the EV timeline’s on pause—and the auto industry may be facing a new round of tariff-driven pressure to go domestic.
